Frostburg State University
Professor of English
Frostburg, Maryland
I began publishing science fiction, fantasy and horror at the short story, novelette and novella lengths in 1997 and have received a Nebula Award, a Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and three World Fantasy Awards. My most recent collection is An Agent of Utopia, from Small Beer Press and Recorded Books; I read nine stories on the audio edition. Other writing honors include an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Mary Kay Bray Award for criticism from the Science Fiction Research Association. I have taught undergraduate writing since 1993 and have been on the faculty of Frostburg State University in the Maryland mountains since 2008. I attended Clarion West in 1994, received my MFA in fiction writing from the University of Alabama in 2000, and have taught for Clarion and Clarion West multiple times. Other short-term teaching gigs include the Masterclass of the SF Foundation, held at London’s Royal Greenwich Observatory. My current research project, Weird Western Maryland, is ongoing at www.Frostburg.edu/personal-arduncan. I embrace the growing diversity of our field, want to meet as many newcomers as I can, and will happily talk about writing, writers, movies, weird history, folklore, Forteana and sff for hours, until someone intervenes.
